Q and A with Joey Walsh (A.k.A HockeyStickMan)

Q: WHO IS THIS HOCKEYSTICKMAN AND WHERE DID HE COME FROM?
Joey: HockeyStickMan started out in 2010 when I left BC Hockey and returned home, my old man retired from 35 years of shift work, and my two brothers were playing hockey at Dartmouth. We had a huge van fit for road tours, had a lot of fun watching college hockey in new towns every weekend, and collected and fixed a ridiculous pile of broken sticks. Fast forward to 2019 and we are now working with over 100 teams on a regular basis and have the support of talented staff to help the family business.
Q: HOW DID THINGS DEVELOP INTO BUYING PRO STICKS AND EQUIPMENT?
Joey: Things have grown organically through conversations with equipment managers. Over the years, different opportunities have presented themselves as teams expressed budgetary and storage concerns. We have been able to develop and grow our business through the purchase of everything from used sticks to new gear.
Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST EQUIPMENT CHALLENGES THAT SPHEM MANGERS ARE DISCUSSING?
Joey: At each level I hear about the difficulties of keeping equipment within a given budget. Players frequently want to change sticks and new makes and models are introduced regularly. Managers want to be able to accommodate player requests, but this can leave a lot of unused stock. During the season, the focus is on the team, and while selling off extra gear is important, it?s not necessarily top of mind. Members have told us that credit delays, or team revenues produced from other sources, do not adequately reflect within their equipment budgets. That is why we act as a one stop shop and pay up front.
Q: THERE ARE MANY OTHER WAYS OF SELLING STICKS AND GEAR, WHY DO SO MANY SPHEM MEMBERS WORK WITH HOCKEYSTICKMAN?
Joey: We have always had the attitude, make things as easy as possible on the team, give them the best return, and focus on a long-term relationship that can help the club year after year. This includes a no questions approach where we meet in person and buy everything. Mix in a high level of trust and a little fun along the way and it works well for us both.

Q: WHERE DO YOU THINK SPHEM MEMBER TEAMS FIND THE MOST BENEFIT?
Joey: Giving guys a good price on their new sticks, ?no cherry picking? is the best way to put a lot of money back into their equipment budget. Knowing that we are a resource gives the manger the freedom to stock up before playoffs, allow players to change patterns, etc. A lot of the cheques that we cut are very appreciated by the club?s front office. It is not something most business can or should do, we are simply fortunate enough to have a large enough reach through our website that we can sell a lot of the more obscure or ?difficult sellers? and so we aren?t afraid to take on that challenge.
Q: WHAT FUTURE ISSUES DO YOU SEE COMING FOR EQUIPMENT MANAGERS?
Joey: Players at the top level are going through equipment at a staggering rate, and college and junior programs are increasingly pushing closer to pro level treatment. There are also more sets of gear, leaving an increased amount of new and used throughout each season. Changes in sponsorships are also creating a lot of needs that in many cases stretch beyond the reach of a team?s pro shop or equipment sale. That is why we are positioning this company as a resource that can work with the team?s current sales efforts and take the gear and spread it to bargain hunters in a non-invasive way all throughout the world.
