On Thursday March 12, 2020 we had the bus loaded and were about to head out on a two-game trip. The only thing left was to determine our final standings and see who we would meet in the first round of playoffs.   But wait…with the news of the NBA shutting down and concern for everyone’s safety, the Ontario Hockey League temporarily suspended play. After a short Team meeting and unloading the bus and unpacking, we all went home to await further notice. Hopefully this would only be a short term shut-down and we would be back to our normal routine.  We soon found out that this would not be the case. In speaking with many of our colleagues, depending on each situation, some had access to the rink and some were locked out.   Not long after, the official word came that the OHL had cancelled the remainder of the season and playoffs.   Days turned into weeks and weeks into months!  And here we are still waiting to hear if we are playing this season.

I know as Equipment Managers we are all ready for whenever that is. Sticks with new specs are either ordered or all set to have shipped upon a return date! New helmets all set with logos and numbers already  sit in the players’ stalls.  We just need the players to get the green light to arrive. I know we are all wanting to get back to our Equipment Rooms and Dressing Rooms to do our job.

If I had to find any positive thru this whole ordeal it would be the time we got to spend with our family. We are always so busy with our schedule and work and have made many sacrifices. This past summer was something so new to all of us.  Not that we could go anywhere…. but the time with family can’t be replaced!

Please note that any members who attend the Annual Conference from the Canadian Hockey League are eligible to attain CEU’s for their respective associations. (NATA, CATA, AEMA ). We had an excellent presence last year in Texas. It is always our goal is to have as many Athletic Trainers/Equipment Managers from the Canadian Hockey League as possible attending the PHATS/SPHEM meetings.

Congrats to all the milestone recipients this season!

Please also note that if any Athletic Therapists from the CHL have questions about PHATS or CEU’s you may contact Brian Cheeseman, Athletic Therapist, Edmonton Oil Kings.
