Who can apply?

US-based students currently enrolled in an accredited MSAT Athletic Training program.
Canadian-based students currently enrolled in an accredited Athletic Therapy program.

If I am already a Certified Athletic Trainer/ Athletic Therapist seeking opportunities in professional hockey, can I still apply?

PHATS is primarily focusing its efforts on connecting students seeking clinical experience. However, if the applicant is currently certified he/she can still apply.  Member clubs will review all applications sent to their attention and determine, on a case-by-case basis, if an applicant is a good fit for their club.

When can I apply?

Application Windows:

October 1-31, 2026 for Spring/Summer 2026-2027 season

February 15 – March 15, 2027 for Fall/Spring 2027-2028 season

October  1-31, 2027 for Spring/Summer 2028 season

What should I expect during the application process?

PHATS serves as a clearinghouse to collect all applications during the application window. Once the application window closes, PHATS will distribute applicant information to each NHL, AHL, and/or other minor league organizations that the applicant selects. PHATS does not guarantee formal communication between the applicant and club, nor placement with selected clubs. It will be at the sole discretion of the club to initiate communication with the applicant to begin the interview process to discuss the needs, duration, and dates of the position.

What is required to apply?

• Resume
• Letter of recommendation from program director, or recent clinical preceptor. *It is advised that your letter of recommendation comes from a preceptor or supervisor who has observed your work in the clinical setting.

Does this student internship offer compensation?

Travel arrangements, housing, and compensation will be at the sole discretion of the individual club/organization. This information can be obtained during the interview stage if the applicant is selected for an interview.

How many organizations can I apply to?

You will have the ability to select up to five clubs between the NHL and AHL. As mentioned previously, not all clubs will take clinical immersion students.  

If you are seeking clinical experience with a team in a League not listed, you will have the opportunity to designate that team on the application as well. A list of minor league teams can be found at the following link: https://phatssphem.com/teams/

How should I best prepare for the application?

• Research teams you are applying to.
• Consider teams in your current city/state.
• Speak with your program director to see if your school is affiliated with a team; and discuss how you can manage a clinical experience in conjunction with your program’s expectations during your semester.
• Have letters of recommendation and resume ready before filling out the application.
